Sochi Russia 2014...

The Winter Olympics got under way in Sochi Russia on Thursday, and how many of us knew or had heard about it? There was a so much hype around the London Olympics and I don’t know anyone that didn’t watch or read about it at some point, whereas the Winter Olympics seem to go under the radar. The Winter Olympics is a major international sporting event and like the summer Olympics is held every four years. The first Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. The original sports were alpine and cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating. This year in Russia the disciplines will be: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Luge, Nordic Combined, Short Track Speed Skating, Skeleton, Ski Jumping, Snow Board and Speed Skating.

The Games were held every four years from 1924 until 1936, then they were interrupted by World War II. The Winter and Summer Olympic Games were held in the same years until 1992 when they were placed on separate four-year cycles in alternating even-numbered years after a decision made in 1986 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to place.

This year team GB has a realistic medal opportunity in freestyle skiing, snowboarding, curling, short track skating and skeleton. In Vancouver 2010 they only returned with one medal and that was Amy Williams winning gold in the skeleton.

We need to get everyone behind Team GB in the Sochi Games just as much as we did in London.

GO TEAM GB!!!
