Do you want to burn as many calories as possible in the shortest time? Do you want to hit every muscle in your body in one session and melt away fat and not even touch a piece of cardio equipment? Ever found yourself wandering round the gym and winging your session each time due to boredom of your normal workout?
Well if you answered yes to any of those questions then you need to try circuit training!! Circuit training is a workout routine that combines cardiovascular fitness and resistance training. It was first used in the late 1950s as a method to develop general fitness. The initial routines were arranged in a circle, alternating between different muscle groups (hence the name circuit training). By allowing only short rest intervals of 30-90 seconds between stations, cardiovascular fitness is gained along with the benefits of resistance training.
For those who haven’t been to one of my circuit training classes, each week is a completely different workout hitting every muscle in your body. They can vary from 8-15 stations around the room with different exercises on each station to just having your own space to complete the set workout. Depending on the session it can be time based i.e. 30 seconds work 30 seconds rest or it could be to complete 20 reps of each exercise. If you love your cardio but know you should be doing weights then circuit sessions offer the best of both worlds by combining intervals of high intensity cardio with weight training to give you a killer workout.
Thanks to the many benefits of high intensity interval training (HIIT) and heavy weight lifting, circuit training kicks your fat-burning furnace into high gear. You'll torch more calories in 20 minutes than you would in an entire hour on the cross trainer reading a magazine. Plus, the after burn effect will have you torching calories for up to 48 hours after your workout finishes.
Sure each session is tough and you’ll leave nice and sweaty, but you will feel awesome once you have completed it and you won’t have spent hours pounding the treadmill or going aimlessly round and round on the cross trainer staring at the same spot on the wall.
