Muscle obviously weighs more than fat, right? Wrong!! A pound of muscle weighs exactly the same as a pound of fat. The misunderstanding here is that muscle is much more dense than fat, so in volume it seems to weigh more. What I mean by this is that muscle takes up less space on the body than fat. Muscle also burns more calories than fat, so the more lean muscle you have on your body the more calories you will burn, even at rest.
The biggest fear I hear from clients, mainly ladies (sorry ladies) is that they don’t want to do weights as they either “get bulky really fast” or they are “scared of looking like a the hulk!!” As I have just said, the leaner you are the more calories you burn and I promise ladies that you will not look like the incredible hulk just from lifting some weights. It’s impossible, unless you are taking some form of testosterone or growth hormone supplement.
When starting a new training routine especially resistance/weight training, the best piece of advice is to not let the scales take over your life. They shouldn’t dictate how you are doing because throughout your training there will be times when your weight just doesn’t change from one week to the next. This is because you are burning off the excess fat stores and replacing it with lean muscle mass. Instead, let the way your clothes fit you be your guide on how amazing you are doing or how you’re able to perform daily tasks better and easier as you are now fitter and stronger than ever before.
