Tips to stay safe in the dark

Winter is definitely here and those dark, wet and cold training sessions outside can be extremely difficult. Not only can it dampen your enthusiasm as much as your feet, it can also be quite dangerous, especially if you run on the roads.

Whether you are heading out first thing in the morning or last thing at night, wearing the correct gear is key to your safety. Wearing bright fluorescent colours is a great idea during the day but at night white apparel with reflective panels shows up better in motorists’ headlights. Winter kit often has reflective areas, and many running shoes come with reflective panels on the heels.

At any time of the day, but especially at night, always run towards oncoming traffic when drivers may not expect to see a pedestrian. You could even try wearing a head torch, which will make it much easier for drivers to see you and also help you pick out the best path.

No matter how careful you are when you run in the dark, always be prepared. Tell someone where you’re planning to run and roughly how long you will be out for and where possible stick to well-lit routes.

I love winter running and for my clients that don’t feel safe but still want to get out, I go running with them. If you don’t have a personal trainer try and train with a friend or even join up at your local running club.
